Hello all, This is Iniyavan and I welcome you all for this blog...
DSLR - Scratch to Advanced
I assure you that you will change the shooting mode to Manual in DSLR after reading this guid...
This blog is divided into several parts and this is the first part of the blog.
Why I decided to write this blog ?
Now a days, many people are interested in photography and cinematography, also many own's a DSLR or plan to buy a DSLR camera. This blog gives a practical introduction to Photography and primarily teach you on How to use a DSLR from scratch to expert.
Is it mandatory to have a DSLR ?
Nop, The guidance provided in this blog are applicable to all the Camera's which allows shooting in Manual mode but the information are efficient if you have DSLR since dslr provides a complete control over the image clicks.
My Interest in photography
From my childhood i am interested in photography and cinematography and i made this one of my hobby. Basically i like to photograph Nature and Wildlife since i love them the most and i also own a photography page.
Ok Lets start the journey !
What is photography ?
Photography is the ART of Observing the subject and capturing its moments in a creative way.In other words Photography deals with capturing the emotions or characteristics of the subject in a inspiring manner.
Types of photography
The photography is classified into many types, major one's are
Long exposure photography,
Wildlife photography,
Documentary photography,
Food and drink photography
Fashion photography,
Landscape photography
Candid photography , etc...
We will be exploring the above technique's in the up-coming paragraph's.
Exploring DSLR outlook
Below image describes the Dslr body and components in a overview
Many DSLR camera posses more or less similar buttons and functionalities and this is applicable to most of the DSLR camera's.

Some of the mid-range DSLR and High end DSLR posses an additional screen at the top, check the above image
Hot shoe
Many dslr comes with a hot shoe mount, it is made up of hard metal in which various hot shoe devices like flashlight, External microphone, other accessories can be mounted by just sliding into the mount.
Mode Dial
The mode dial lets you to select the various kinds of mode.We will discuss the types of mode later in a detailed manner.
B/W mini Display
This is a small black and white kind of display found in most high end dslr and mid range dslr, This displays the light meter, shutter speed, lens aperture, battery status, mode, etc.
View finder
Viewfinder is a one wich shows the field of view of the lens. This is used for framing the picture.
Some camera's doesn't posses a viewfinder but don't worry, you can use the built in display(LCD display/screen) to frame the subject.
Below image describes the front face of the camera(subject perspective)
Now i think many will be clear with the external structure and core functional part of a dslr
NOTE: The information provided is core for all the dslr camera but the appearance and buttons may vary from one model to another.
yahoooo ! Now its time to dive inside the camera and take a look
Yeeeep I found the Light sensor
It all deals with the light sensor which act like the heart of the camera. This image(in form of light) is captured by using the light sensor which can be seen in the above picture.
Where to mount the lens ?
The silver coloured ring is the mount where the lens must be mounted.Kindly do check the mount process in the manual of the camera since some camera posses a different way of mounting the lens.
But the usual way is to just align the white mark of lens and camera mount and with slight pressure rotate the lens and you will gear a "click" sound that indicates the lens is mounted properly. But please refer to the camera manual since with each model the process differs.
TIPS
Keep the camera facing the earth(tilted position towards ground) and mount the lens since this can reduce the dust from entering into the sensor.
OK All set, what to do next ?
Its time to Know the working of DSLR
Capturing the Light
Consider the below image of a side facing camera

Its time to SLICE it !
NO Worries , Its too simple to understand the mechanism, above image is just representing the sliced portion of the dslr and components inside it, U will better understand in few min...since i am going to explain the working mechanism.
View through viewfinder
The viewfinder helps in viewing the image (light enters through the lens). The view you see in viewfinder is got from multiple reflections. Ok how it take place?
1.At first the light enters into the lens .
2.Then the light is getting reflected from the mirror which is kept at 45' which you can see in the above image
3.This entered light cannot be directly seen from the viewfinder since it will be upside down.
4.Now comes the roll of pentaprism, the pentaprism reflects the image inside it (turn upside down image to proper one as of the subject)by multiple reflections and finally direct it to the viewfinder.
And that's the image you see through the viewfinder.
Ok, how the light is captured ?
Its too simple to understand how the light is captured,
1.At first the mirror which is reflecting the light to the fiewfinder is locked up (when the capture button is clicked)
2.Now the light entered into the camera directly strike the image sensor and the image is recorded in digital form, Now nothing is visible through the viewfinder till the image is captured.
3. After this the mirror is released and the light isreflected back to the viewfinder and is visible through the viewfinder.
In between the mirror and the image sensor there is an important component called "Shutter" which we will discuss in future sections, As of Now ,Just know the word "shutter".
Typical representation of a pentaprism
And finally , this is the technical introduction to DSLR and its basic capturing
First part ends here, In the next part( part 2) we will discuss about the various types of lens. You can check the tutorial for the Lens from the TAB located on the TOP of the page or Click here to go to part 2 lense.
