(Part2)Lens

Lens (p-2)

Lens and more...

Hello all ! Welcome back to the Part 2 of Digital SLR tutorial about lens.

After reading this lesson, I assure you that you will become familiar will lens types and when to use which kind of lens.

One thing you must know before proceeding to know more about the lenses.  Its focal length.

What is focal length ?
It is the distance between the image capturing sensor and the lens when the subject is clearly in focus. This is usually measured in millimetres.

How focal length affect the image ?
This focal length tells us how the subject is going to be captured by the sensor. If the lens has short focal length(like 55mm,24mm,etc) then large portion of the subject is going to be captured with less magnification. If the lens has a long focal length(like 300mm,600mm,etc) then the image captured is going to be in a magnified way and only few portion is going to be captured by the camera image sensor.
In simple : Short focal length -> wide angle view : Long focal length -> narrow angle of view.
You can understand better by combining above explanation with below image.

Types of lens

What is Zoom and Prime lens ?

The two type of lenses are Zoom and prime. OK what is a prime lens? Prime lens is a type of lens which has a fixed focal length that means the focal length of the prime lens cannot be changed.
Then what about zoom? Zoom lens is a type of lens in with the zoom factor is adjustable.

Prime vs Zoom, which is better ?

Both the prime and zoom lens has its own pros and cons. Prime lens have fixed focal length and the image captured by it is exceptionally sharp and easy to shoot the subject.Prime lens is also smaller in size and cost more. Most of the prime lens posses a larger aperture value (just understand as of now will discuss more in detail about aperture in future lessons)hence it can be used for low-light situations.(In simple terms prime lenses are What u see is what u capture/No adjustable focus)

Zoom lens allows us to change the focal length by adjusting the zoom of the lens(This lead to move closer or farther from the subject). When coming to size of the zoom lens , the size is more when compared with prime lens. But a single Zoom lens can be used for different kind of photography sice it posses variable focal length. This type of lens is also far cheap when compared to prime lens.Using  zoom lens also reduces the number of time the lens has to be replaced/ changed while taking photographs since it  has a variable focal length and adaptable.

What lens do i prefer and what i use?

My view : I always prefer Zoom lens since it is cheap and has a variable focal length hence it can be used for many purpose(ONE lens MANY purpose). Also replacing of lens is not often which reduces the possibility of dust particles entering the camera and also saves lots of time.

No let us discuss about the types of lenses in detail

Standard/Kit lens

The lens which comes along with the DSLR when you buy, is most frequently called as a kit lens. This kind of lens are more suitable for Everyday photo shoot. This lens are mostly 18-55mm or 18-50mm lenses. Most lenses which comes out of the box when buying a dslr is zoom lens. This is best suited for common everyday photos hoot. Below image represent a sample shot from a standard kit lens.

Wide angle,Extreme wide angle

As the name suggest, the wide angle  lens captures or used to capture an subject in extreme wide prescriptive. Typically 8 - 24mm range lens are termed as wide angle lens. Wide angle lenses are used to take large landscapes and usually used for standard day to day shoot. When this go further wide it is termed as fisheye lenses. These fisheye lenses (below 8mm)curves the image and capture more things in one shot. Below image represent a samplle shot from a wide angle lens.

Macro lens

Macro lens are intended to capture images of the subject in extreme close up.In simple macro lens are used to take image of a subject in an unusual close manner to the subject.Below image represent a sample shot from a macro lens.

Last but least

Telephoto lens

Telephoto lens are different from other standard lenses. The telephoto lens have long focal length, the field of view is very narrow and posses greater magnification. This telephoto lens is used when the subject is too far to capture and widely used in wild life photography, space explorations or to fill the frame with the distance subject.Below image represent a sample shot from a telephoto lens.

Now you could have got an idea about the various types of lenses and where to use which lens. Ok This part 2 ends here and in next part we will be discussing about the     EXPOSURE (Part 3).

You can check the tutorial for the Exposure from the TAB located on the TOP of the page or Click here  EXPOSURE (Part3).
